· Play sand is really dusty and takes forever to get rinsed enough to go into the aquarium. I have used it and it can be done But then I discovered Pool filter sand and will never use play sand again. Pool filter sand has rounder particles and doesn't have to be rinsed I have never seen that warning on play sand before, there maybe something else mixed with it.

If you want a complete sand bottom then remove most of the gravel but keep a nice size pocket in the center and cover it with sand. There is a ton of beneficial bacteria on that gravel and to remove it all can easily throw you in to a new cycle, seriously damaging or killing your fish. Most of the other advice is good though.

· The bottom layer is propogation sand from bunnings. it is full of clay and nutrients. then there was a sprinkiling of blood and bone then this was covered in a thickish layer of silica sand. It looks good and now i need to plant it, however, im still waiting for my light to b fixed so all my plants are residing in a breeding tank where i can actually provide the required light.
